Canadian resume format guide · Updated October 22, 2026

What to put on your Canadian resume

Use this section order as a starting point, then adjust it to the job posting. A student may place education and projects before work history; an experienced applicant can lead with relevant employment. Follow the employer’s instructions whenever they specify a format or required information.

  1. Contact: your name, city and province, professional email and phone number. Add a portfolio link when it supports the role.
  2. Summary: two or three lines connecting your relevant strengths to the position. Replace broad claims such as “hard worker” with specific skills.
  3. Skills: tools, languages or practical abilities you can demonstrate. Use wording from the posting only when it accurately describes you.
  4. Experience: job title, employer and dates, with concise bullets explaining your contribution. Include useful experience gained outside Canada.
  5. Education and credentials: accurately name your program, institution and relevant qualifications. Include certifications only if you hold them.

Turn duties into useful evidence

Use an action, the task and a concrete detail. The examples below are fictional writing examples, not claims to copy into your own history. Add numbers only when you can verify them.

Retail or stockroom

Rough note: “Put stock on shelves.”

Clearer: “Replenished shelves before opening, checked labels and rotated stock to keep products ready for customers.”

Office administration

Rough note: “Helped with office tasks.”

Clearer: “Checked invoice details against order records and followed up on missing information before processing.”

Before you send: application checklist

  • Keep the most relevant evidence easy to find. Remove repeated points that do not help explain your fit.
  • Use consistent dates and clear headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Review spelling and contact details.
  • Leave out your Social Insurance Number, photo and unrelated personal details. Keep the focus on your qualifications.
  • Follow the requested file type. If PDF is accepted, check the exported document before uploading it; formatting alone cannot guarantee an ATS result or interview.
